The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the suspension of its planned nationwide strike over naira notes scarcity.

NLC announced the suspension on Tuesday, March 28, after its national executive council meeting.

The strike was to have started on Wednesday, March 29, with picketing planned for branches of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), nationwide.

The President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero said the action was suspended after positive briefings from its affiliate state councils across the country.

However, the NLC has promised a return to the planned strikes if the naira scarcity does not abate in two weeks time.

The planned strike had rattled the Nigerian Government which scrambled the Labour Minister and the CBN Governor to meet with the leadership of the NLC to find a solution to the mass downing of tools.

The naira scarcity was brought about by a change in the design of the naira and a withdrawal of the old currency notes from circulation.
