Nigeria and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has been named the Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Footballer of the year 2023. The title was conferred last night on the striker at the CAF Awards Night in Marrakech, Morocco.

The striker who had a massive season with his club Napoli winning the Serie A, edged out Liverpool and Egypt striker, Mohammed Salah, who came second after the round of voting and nominations for the title.

Osimhen who has spent the last tree seasons at Napoli is heavily speculated to make a move elsewhere for a record fee in the summer.

The striker is also expected to feature for Nigeria in the 2024 African Cup of Nations to be held early 2024 in Cote D’Ivoire. Osimhen’s win makes it the first time a Nigerian player has won the title in the last 24 years. The last Nigerian player to win the title was Kanu Nwankwo. Kanu won it twice in 1996 and 1998 while with Inter Milan and Arsenal, respectively.

In another record-breaking win, Asisat Oshoala, the Barcelona and Nigeria forward won the player of the year title in the Women category. Oshoala has now won the title for a record sixth time.

Asisat Oshola

The women category has in the last couple of years seen a total dominance by the super talented Oshoala. She won it in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022 and now 2023.

Congratulations to the worthy winners and representatives of Nigeria, Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala.
