Why I Skipped Labour Party Convention – Peter Obi

Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has explained why he did not attend the controversial party national convention held last week in Anambra State.

He said he avoided the convention because the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, failed to conduct wide consultations with key stakeholders of the party before holding the convention.

Obi made this statement on Friday while addressing the country on Twitter (X).

The Labour Party stalwart maintained that the right thing needed to be done to salvage the party, while reiterating that he was more passionate about building a new Nigeria than building a new Labour Party.

Obi also called for the Obidient Movement to build a structure and become blocs and part of the political process.

Recall that Julius Abure, the embattled National Chairman of the party has been under fire with numerous allegations of corruption and directly facing a challenge from the mainstream Nigerian Labour Congress to step down from his position.

Abure and his inner caucus organized a convention in Anambra state last week which resulted in the renewal of his seat as the Chairman of the party. Abure had earlier faced opposition from another faction of the party led by Lamidi Apapa.

However, the Labour Party, which was thrown into limelight with the entrance of Peter Obi and the “Obidients” into the party, would now face the dire possibility of Peter Obi and his hordes of supporters leaving the party.
