There are reports of protests today in Sagamu, Ogun State. The rioters were protesting the rejection of the old naira notes by banks in the city.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, was alleged to have given his supporters old naira notes with an assurance that the notes remain tender on Sunday.
However, the notes were rejected at the banks today, which precipitated the riots.
The rioters reportedly set fire on Union Bank, First Bank and Keystone Bank in Sagamu as a result.
Reports also gathered that the angry protesters also pulled down posters of the governor and that of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.
The naira redesign has caused so much tension and confusion nationwide with President Muhammadu Buhari and the Central Bank maintaining that the old N500 and N1,000 are no longer legal tender while Governors in his party, APC, are taking an opposite stance and trying to enforce the acceptance of the old notes in their domain. There have been reports of protests and destruction of bank properties in several states in Nigeria.
