Similanayi Fubara Of PDP Wins Rivers State Governorship Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Similanayi Fubara, has been declared the winner of Rivers State governorship election By INEC.

The Returning Officer who announced the election results on Monday night, March 20, said Fubara secured 302,614 votes while the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Pastor Tonye Cole, took the second place with a total number of 95,274 votes.

SDP governorship candidate, Senator Magnus Abe, came third with a total of 46,981 votes .

Fubara won in all the 23 local government areas of the State.

The elections in Rivers State have been characterized by violence, killings and voter apathy. There were reports of town criers going round different communities and suburbs warning potential voters to stay at home, if they were not going to vote for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. The opposition parties have called the elections a sham and said it should be cancelled.

The former Governor of the State, Rotimi Amaechi, had accused INEC and the Police of colluding with the State Governor , Nyesom Wike to rig the elections in favor of PDP. Amaechi had also pointedly accused the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu of being in cahoots with Wike.
