The tax dispute between the Ghana Revenue Authority and South African mobile telecommunications operator, MTN has attracted the attention of the South African Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor.
A few weeks ago, Ghana Revenue Authority slammed a $773million tax bill on the Ghana subsidiary of MTN after auditing the firm for back taxes between 2014 and 2018. The Authority said MTN had under declared its income by about 30% for the 2014-2018 operational period.
MTN had disputed the tax bill and accuracy of the assessment and vowed to fight it.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation released a statement in which the Naledi Pandor was quoted as calling on the parties to do everything possible to find an amicable solution.
MTN currently has operations in many countries in Africa and the Middle East.
Recall that about three years ago, MTN in Nigeria also faced a similar tax issue to the tune of $2billion. That issue was resolved successfully with the tax assessment significantly brought down for the Nigerian subsidiary of the firm.
