Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has threatened to “destroy” any bank in Kano that refuses to accept the old N500 and N1,000 notes.

This declaration is in direct contrast with the directive of the President, Muhammadu Buhari and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who have declared that the old N500 and N1,000 are not legal tender in Nigeria.

Ganduje is quoted as saying “We will convert the space of the destroyed banks into schools that will provide quality education for our children,”

He made this declaration on Friday in Kano during an exercise to inspect palliatives provided to curtail the effects of the naira scarcity to residents of Kano.

Similar pronouncements to shut down banks have also come from the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.

Recall that Ganduje has been very critical of the President on the naira redesign and even said the President had not achieved anything tangible in his eight years in power.

Ganduje and President Muhammadu Buhari are members of the same All Progressives Congress.
