Super Falcons of Nigeria put up a brave showing in their first game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup against reigning Olympic Champions, Canada. The tournament is hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The game ended goalless after several incidents and heroic efforts from the Nigerian goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie who also saved a penalty given to the Canadians.

At the tail end of the end, Nigeria had to play with 10 players as Deborah Abiodun was shown a red card and sent off for dangerous play.

Nigeria started the game with positive play and almost opened scoring in the 23rd minute with a well taken hit from Ifeoma Onumomu which was parried over by the Canadian goalkeeper, Kailen Sheridan.

The second half was when the drama started as the Canadians began pressing seriously to open scoring in the game.

Their efforts almost paid off when Francisca Ordega was adjudged to have brought down Christine Sinclair in the Nigerian box. The referee pointed to the penalty box but the Nigerian goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie saved the penalty and pushed the rebound away from the on-rushing Canadians.

The Nigerians had several chances to put the ball in the net of the Canadians but poor finishing and composure was their failing.

Good play from Ifeoma Onumonu and Uchenna Kalu almost resulted in a goal but the effort was ruled offside by the referee.

Late into the game Deborah Abiodun was shown a red card for a foul on Ashley Lawrence leaving Nigeria to end the game with 10 players.

It was however a muted performance from the Nigerian star girl, Asisat Oshoala who put up a subpar performance.   Nigeria could have carried the day, if only they were more clinical and composed.

Game ended 0-0 with the points shared. Next game is against the host, Australia on Thursday
